Frequently Asked Questions

Does acupuncture hurt?

The needles are so thin that they do not stimulate enough nerve ending to cause pain. When the needle makes contact with chi (the energy) most patients experience a slight tingling sensation.

What are the needles like?

Acupuncture needles are far different from the hypodermic needle used to give injections. Acupuncture needles are solid, thin and fine like hair. They are pre-sterilized, individually packaged, disposable needles, absolutely insuring that there is no contamination or transmission of disease possible.

Are there any treatments without needle?

The other effective means of bringing about the desired physiological response include acupressure (Acupuncture without needles) tui ni, electronic stimulation, heat, cupping,

moxibustion and herbal therapy.

How many treatments do I need?

It is usually recommended that a series of five to ten treatments be given initially. However every case is unique, and some can be resolved in only one or two treatments.

I will be happy to discuss your case and treatment plan with you frankly and in detail.

Are there any side effects of acupuncture?

One of the greatest advantages of acupuncture is the absence of serious side effects associated with its use. Rarely, there may be some slight bruising around the area where a needle was placed.

How long does a treatment take?

The initial visit usually lasts one and a half to two hours due to the time required for the extensive intake questions and examination. Follow-up treatments tend to take only one hour, but can vary depending on types of modalities used.

What are acupuncture points and meridians?

The meridians are pathways in which the qi (energy) and blood of the human body is circulated. They pertain to the zang-fu (organs) interiorly and extend over the body exteriorly, forming a network and linking the tissues and organs into a organic whole. They are responsible for the circulation of qi and blood and distributed both

interiorly and exteriorly across the body.

Acupuncture points are the specific sites through which the qi of the zang-fu organs and meridians is transported to the body surface.
